Enhancing unique landscape
From Geuldal and Geleenbeek to Rodebach
The area between Beekdaelen and Valkenburg aan de Geul suffers greatly from water problems. There are regular floods and there is erosion due to increasing downpours. The water is also polluted. Natura 2000 areas are under considerable pressure in this region. With farmers, we are discussing joint future perspectives, shared ownership and management of rural areas. Together, we are looking at how to solve these problems and challenges. And how we can simultaneously start the agricultural transition. In doing so, local and circular entrepreneurship is encouraged.
An important part of the project is the Schimmert/Ravenbosch pilot. In the period 2024-2026, work will be done to strengthen nature and reduce nitrogen in and around the Natura 2000 area in Ravensbosch. Furthermore, this pilot will work on water quantity and quality, agriculture, landscape, liveability and tourism & recreation. This pilot also offers the chance to make a connection both literally and figuratively between Parkstad Limburg and the Heuvelland region. It is not easy to bring together the various interests and parties involved. However, initial signs indicate that both farmers and Waterschap Limburg and Staatsbosbeheer are keen to take up the challenge together. Together, they want to put all possibilities on the table and capitalise on opportunities!
