Glossary
Some of the technical terms we use aren't easy. Hence this glossary with explanations.
Employment rate
What percentage of the population is gainfully employed.
Biobased products
These are products made from plants, animals or bacteria. They are better for the environment because they are easier to reuse or decompose after use.
Cultural history
This is the history of everything made by humans.
Sustainable mobility
This is transport that minimises environmental, social and economic impacts. Think public transport, cycling, walking or electric driving.
Fossil raw materials
These include coal, oil and gas. These raw materials are used to heat rooms and produce products.
Heat stress
The number of tropical days and warm nights is increasing. As temperatures rise, people are experiencing heat stress more often. Heat stress can be prevented, among other things, by greening the environment, installing water sources and installing ventilation and shading in and on homes.
Quality of life
This is how attractive an (urban) area is to live or work in.
Submission
This is a problem or challenge. Solutions must be found for this.

Regio Deal
This is an agreement between the central government and several regions in the Netherlands. A Regio Deal involves working together to improve the living environment, nature and the economy, among other things.
Theoretically educated
These are people who have a college or university degree.
Resilience
Something is resilient if it can adapt to a situation. And when it can pick up where it left off.
Biodiversity
These are the different types of plants and animals in nature. More diversity in nature is better.
CO2
This is a greenhouse gas that absorbs heat. An excess of this gas causes the earth to get warmer and warmer.
Sustainability
This means what is good for people and the environment. And also that something is made so well that it can be used for a long time.
Zero energy
A zero-energy building generates the energy it uses itself. For example, with solar panels.
Incubator
An incubator is an organisation that supports start-ups and entrepreneurs. For example, in setting up and growing their business. The assistance can consist of different actions, such as helping to find fundings, providing office space, giving advice or offering education.
Multi-helix collaboration
This is a collaboration between businesses, education, governments, social institutions and citizens.
Practically educated
These are people with a MBO or vocational training/degree.
Start-up
This is a new and fast-growing company.
Water-robust
An environment that can withstand water well is water-robust. The land then absorbs water in rainy seasons and releases water in dry periods.
Biosciences
These studies investigate living things and biological, natural processes in humans and animals. The knowledge from these studies is used in healthcare, agriculture and for food production, for example.
Circular
A circular product can be completely disassembled after use and every part can be used again. So circularity is about using and reusing. And about preventing waste and not letting raw materials go to waste. In fact, it is a cycle where old materials become new again.
Ecosystem
In areas, different animals and plants live together. They need each other to survive. We call this dependence an ecosystem.
Health prevention
This is promoting a healthy lifestyle from an early age. By working on a healthy lifestyle at an early age, illness is prevented or diseases are less severe.
Climate adaption
Climate adaptation is adapting to more extreme weather. So learning to cope with, for example, more rain, heat, drought and higher sea levels.
Natura-2000 area
This is a protected nature reserve. There are Natura 2000 areas all over Europe. In these areas, plant and animal species that are endangered are protected.
Programme line
A programme line describes a theme or topic that is important for the development of the region. In total, Regio Deal Zuid-Limburg has four programme lines.
National government
This is the central government of the Netherlands. This includes ministries and other national government organisations.
Implementation alliances
These are the cooperating parties within Regio Deal Zuid-Limburg projects. They can be healthcare institutions, housing corporations, municipalities, educational institutions, nature organisations or companies.
