Enhancing unique landscape
Corio Glana
The Corio Glana project focuses on restoring the stream and stream valley between the villages of Geleen, Sweikhuizen and Spaubeek. This project is part of the strengthening of the Geleen stream valley between Heerlen and Sittard-Geleen. This reinforcement has been underway for years and has already led to several fine examples of developments. This project will create a route for water, animals and people from the Eifel in Germany to the Hoge Kempen in Belgium.
With the support of Regio Deal Zuid-Limburg, this area is working even harder on health, tourism, sustainable mobility and providing an attractive (residential) environment for its own residents and for visitors. What does the Corio Glana project do?
- Maximum water storage: deepening and re-sinking the stream over a length of 2.1 km.
- Construction of new semi-paved footpaths over a length of 2.1 km.
- Construction of new cycle tracks over a length of 2.1 km.
- Inclusion of walking and cycling routes in the recreational path structure of the Western Mining Region and the cycling and walking junction network over a length of 4.2 km.
- Making archaeological finds visible and experienceable.
- Experiencing cultural history. For example, through the former water mill near Daniken.
- Installing four pedestrian bridges to serve the walking and cycling route network.
- Creating 2 hectares of new forest and converting the fields around the stream into nature reserve.
- Adapting parking facilities at the Ten Eijsden horse riding school in Geleen and Daniken. The latter is the area from Biesenweg to Beekstraat in Geleen.
- Cleaning the fish and nursery pond bottom De Driepoel in Geleen.
