Enhancing unique landscape

Borderless Bocage

A Bocage landscape is an ancient cultural landscape. It has a unique mosaic of landscape, heritage and nature values. Typical of this area is its small scale. Plot boundaries are marked by hedges, wooded banks or terraces. Our Bocage landscape crosses the border. This special area lies in the Voerstreek (Belgian Limburg), the Land of Herve (Belgian Wallonia) and Heuvelland (Dutch Zuid-Limburg).

Biodivers landschap

The Bocage landscape is under pressure. This is due to increasing extreme weather conditions, such as floods and drought, and the loss of rare flora and fauna. Agriculture and intensive recreational and tourist use are also straining the landscape.

To solve these challenges, municipalities on both sides of the border are working together. Their common goal is a lasting, positive development of the area. A process that strengthens the identity and quality of the landscape. Because in addition to producing food and being hospitable, the landscape needs to become biodiverse and thus inhabited by different animals and equipped with different plants.

Moreover, the landscape should act as a sponge. During wet months, it will have to absorb water to then release it in dry months. With all these changes, the Bocage landscape will eventually become a foundation for the future. A future in which generations to come can permanently work, live and recreate in a healthy environment, experience quality of life and feel connected.
